What Odd Things Can You Do Online?

By Cornelius Nunev

The Internet is a useful tool. Occasionally, it's an unsavory or even dangerous tool, but nonetheless, the Internet remains multifaceted. Here are some things you didn't know you could do online, things that are safe, clean and effective. You may even save some money.

Things you didn't know you could do online No. 1 - Find your ring size

You can discern the size of your finger and the ring size you need with websites such as FindMyRingSize.com. It is really very simple to determine your ring size or someone else's ring size if you need to. All you have to do is use a ring and driver's license for comparison.

Things you didn't know you can do on the internet No. 2 - Find pupillary distance

Getting glasses on the internet is much easier if you already have a prescription. Regrettably, pupillary distance is occasionally not listed on a prescription - that's the distance between your pupils. Online eyewear retailer Warby Parker has a particularly great tool for measurement, using a webcam, a card and a slip of paper for marking.

Dealing with your plane seat

SeatGuru and other online websites will provide you with a seat map in a flight, so you can see a picture of the exact seat on the flight. There is also a tool where customers can flag seats if there is a problem with them, making it easier on everybody.

Do a craft in 3-D

If you need to do a 3-D craft, head to Shapeways, i.Materialise and other online websites. They will help you print off your design in order to produce it.

Get a helper

You can get someone else to do small jobs for you such as pet-sitting and gift-shopping while you are too busy with TaskRabbit. A personal assistant is already pre-screened for the job and can help you out.

Create a police-sketch after negative encounter

If things go south with your one-time assistant, web sites like Ultimate Flash Face make it simple for you to quickly create a police-style sketch of the assailant. This is not to suggest that TaskRabbit doesn't shield its customers - it goes the extra mile. Please do not sue us.

MIT course at no cost to you

Free of charge, the MIT Department of Physics supplies video lectures, notes, assignments and solutions via Open Courseware. Mechanics, astrophysics and more could be yours, without the degree to show for it.

Deciding to vote on Congress member

In case you are attempting to decide if you really want to vote for a Congressperson again or not, check OpenCongress. The website will help you put in your zip code and find your congressperson so you can determine if they are worth voting for anymore. You can see how they have voted on bills and issues in congress recently to determine if they are a good fit.
