Preparing A Child For Surgery

By Rey Vetangelo

Reparative and correctional surgeries are common for children, but this does not make them any less scary for either the parent or the child. The only consolation is that a scheduled surgery gives parents the opportunity to prepare both themselves and their child for the upcoming procedure.

By being prepared before the day of the surgery a parent can eliminate much of the child's anxiety concerning the procedure and can likewise help their child to recover from their surgery faster. Quality preparation can be accomplished by first educating one's self about the surgical procedure and subsequently informing the child on pertinent details.

Vitamin D has also been shown to help reduce symptoms of depression. There is debate ias to why this is, but many studies have shown that vitamin D helps release certain neurotransmitters in the brain that are linked to depression. Interestingly enough, these neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, and epinephrine) are the ones that anti-depressants are specifically designed to target. Vitamin D helps to increase levels of these neurotransmitters naturally.

A parent preparing for their child's surgery will want to ask the physician any questions they have about the procedure so that they will be able to answer any questions that their child may have. One of the first questions a parent may want to ask is if the surgery will be an outpatient procedure or if the child will need to spend the night at the hospital.

The hottest part of the day is going to be from 10am-4 pm. During these hours, it is in your best interest to stay inside, or to stay in a shaded area.

An additional way to get enough vitamin D is to eat foods that contain vitamin D. Unfortunately, not very many foods contain this crucial vitamin. The foods that do contain decent amounts of vitamin D are fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel. There are also fairly decent amounts of vitamin D in cheese and egg yolks.

One of the major concerns for children following a surgery can be the presence of scars. Most are afraid of the physical appearance of scars on their bodies and so this specific concern may need to be addressed by the parent. Some comfort may be afforded to the child with the understanding that modern medical equipment, such as electrosurgical devises, leaves very faint and small scaring after healing. Along with in surgery technology like electrosurgical devises, scars can be mitigated following the surgery by using one of the many balms and ointments designed to smooth scars and lesson their appearance.

This information may be comforting to a child who is concerned with having scars. While preparing a child for surgery, a parent will need to be able to use such knowledge and information to address specific concerns that the child may have.

If you are consciously trying to stay healthy, electro surgery will probably not be something that will be needed in your future. Staying healthy will help you to stay happy and enjoy life.
