Maintenance Tips To Help You Care Of Ratchet Tie Down Straps

By Douglas Peterson

The need to relocate certain heavy loads is bound to rise in our daily activities. Regardless of the part of vehicle you wish to secure a load, strapping it tightly becomes inevitable to avoid damages. Many people look for a belt or rope to use for this. It at such times that Ratchet Tie Down Straps come in handy. They are safe for use, and provide a stylish way of securing stuff on transit.

These webbed lashing are of three major types. These include; cam lashing, over-center pivot cam straps and ratchet tie downs. Cam lashings are modelled to make use a cam lever and a frame between which the webbing is threaded. An over center lever cam model relies on resistance caused on the webbing as a result of compression on the straps while ratchet belts use drums and cranking levers to cause tension on lashing.

Regardless of the type or color that you prefer, it is important that have a close look at its quality before making the final decision to buy one. A quality lashing is one whose tension limits are indicated in relation to the maximum weight it can withstand. Even so, make sure to know the difference between working cargo limit and safe load limit as both are independently measured.

Tie downs can be put to use in many activities. One obvious application is in securing a load on the rear or top rack of a truck. Surprisingly, most people opt to use bungee cords that fail to meet the tension required in securing the cargo. There are many health hazards surrounding the use of bungee belts. After all, strapping loads is the primary use for which such lashings are manufactured.

Like any other useful apparatus in your tool box, it is fundamental to take good care of your tie down band in order to enjoy using it for longer. Primarily, you need to inspect its condition upon purchase. It is the only way to affirm yourself that the material from which the webbing was made is durable. Moreover, it should be from a renowned manufacturer to authenticate its high quality as claimed.

During storage, it is advisable to place the ratchet lashing in a dry area away from the harmful rays of the sun. The ultraviolet beams heats up the bands. With time, the webbing becomes rigid and brittle leading to breakages. The reason for this is that heat alters its chemical composition thereby causing a deteriorated strength to handle high tension force.

It is not uncommon to use the lashing on wet cargo. After use, the straps become clammy and wet. It is not advisable to store them while wet. Chances of mildew growth are very high if the band is not allowed to dry. Hence, give it ample time to dry first before storing it. Possibly, wrap the entire band around the ratchet and hold it tight with a rubber band before placing it in a tool box.

It is also important to ensure that the movable components in the ratchet are free from rust. Therefore, always grease these areas so that you find it easy to adjust the levers if need arises. However, users are cautioned not to let the lubricant as oil has a high affinity to dust.
