What Conveyors Are All About Today

By Janet Schmidt

Conveyor devices are the systems that companies use to move heavy and bulky materials from one place to another. They are usually mechanical while their mode of operation may be automatic, semi-automatic, or through hydraulic means. Movement operations are made much more safer, efficient, and better by conveyors. Material handling and packaging industries are some of the industries that make huge use of these devices.

Conveyor systems make that there is efficient and timely transportation of company materials and products. Thus, most companies find these devices very useful and important. A lot of resources and efforts are usually directed by companies to keep their conveyor systems always working at full capacity. Onsite engineers and mechanics are maintained to deal with unforeseeable problems. This is to ensure that no time is wasted without working.

Ensuring peak performance requires that the system be inspected and audited regularly. In addition, key parts should be kept in stock, personnel should be trained well, and motors and reducers must be monitored closely. To ensure that the device lasts long, one should choose the right conveyor type and system design besides ensuring that regular maintenance is done well. No system can last long if it is not maintained properly.

Take-up adjustment is a very simple adjustment on conveyor systems but most people often overlook it. The chain take-up gadget is for ensuring that the chain gets pulled tight when leaving the drive unit. Wearing causes the chain to lengthen, which in turn causes the take-up to extend under the force applied by the springs. This leads to less effect from the take-up. This problem can be easily solved by compressing the take-up spring.

Jamming or surging may occur in the chain the take-up system is not compressed and the process persists. Also, chain and track start wearing much faster. In case the device is driven by a belt, the belt can get twisted into the drive and result in damage. Alternatively, the belt can slip off the chassis.

Regular maintenance also includes lubrication. Lubrication of chain bearings is important to lower friction. Lack of lubrication causes doubling of chain pull. This causes electrical or mechanical overload. Lubrication can be set to happen automatically within the system. This way, lubricators remain on or are switched on after every few cycles. Automation is more suited for conveyor systems used in areas with high temperatures.

Deterioration is also prone to happening on the tracks and chains. Some among the materials that cause deterioration are abrasives, bead, alkaline or acid fluids, steel shot, powder, glass bead, or paint. These foreign substances are contaminants and they cause pitting on the surfaces of chains and track. Wear is also accelerated by contamination.

There are conveyor systems that are designed to convey a specific kind of product. Others can be used to convey a wide range of materials and products. However, before the material is placed on the conveyor to be moved, it is important to check its suitability. Very small, big, light, heavy, or awkwardly shaped objects may cause problems.
