6 Factors You Need To Know About A Collection Agency

By Janine Hughes

Everyone is well-aware that failure to pay your bills on time will result in the debt being turned over to a debt collector. Once this event takes place, many people leave the debt on their credit and never think about it again. In order to work with a collection agency, there are a few things you can do.

Many people are not aware that they can work with the original creditor. You may be surprised at the payment options that are available if you contact the creditor directly. The usual cut-off date for payments is six months. Instead of letting debt pile up on your credit record and affect your credit score, set up a payment plan and pay the debt as quickly as possible.

When you let a debt linger for more than six months, there is a good chance your debt will no longer remain with the original creditor. At this time, the debt you owe will be sent to a collector. When your debt is sent to a collector, you can still set up a payment plan. If you take immediate action, there is a good chance that you will not have to worry about fees and other debts that may be associated with paying the debt late.

You need to be aware of the limits and restrictions an agency has. As far as the agency is concerned, there are strict state and federal laws that must be followed when they initiate contact with an individual. These laws and limits are in place to protect the person who owes a debt. Although you may owe different companies money, the federal and state laws inform creditors when they can call and what they are able to say during a call.

Your creditor wants to work with you to settle a debt, so take the time to reach out to them. Initiate contact with your creditor and explain your situation. They can do just about everything over the phone, and this includes accepting payments. They can pull up your account on the computer and tell you how much money you owe. People should use this time to financially get on track with their bills and pay their debts.

Your creditor can suffice as your credit counselor. They can help you pay off your debt in a timely manner and get your finances in order. Depending on the amount of debt you have, it may take a while to pay your debt off entirely, but you have to start somewhere. One of the best ways to start taking control of the debt you owe is by setting up a payment arrangement.

Many people assume the only payment option they have are monthly payments. There are different agreements you can use to settle your account. Sometimes the debt you owe can be settled for much less than you owe, but you have to contact your creditor.

Here are a few things you can do to get your debt under control and increase your credit score. When you increase your credit score, many doors of opportunities will open. A decent credit score determines how you purchase a home or vehicle.
