Google created Smart Lists to automate the creation of re-marketing lists. These lists depend on the anonymous conversion data that is taken from countless websites that implemented Google Analytics and opted to share their data with Google.
Just recently, Google's Analytics team introduced the smart lists on Google Analytics option; automating the whole process. Smart lists will basically rely on gathering conversion information, anonymously, from all websites that use Google Analytics and who share their data with Google. With smart lists, the whole re-marketing list management process will become automatic- but only if you opt in and allow Google to manage your lists. Smart lists will then, based on visitor's actions on-site, calibrate your re-marketing campaigns on AdWords to ensure that your marketing strategy aligns with each of your visitor's values.
For websites with at 500 e-commerce transactions or more every month and at least ten thousand daily page-views, the Smart List will be customized to use only visit data on a particular website and how the visitors were directed to conversion on that specific website. Only that website has access to this customized information. There is no sharing of this new data, with every list unique.
If a website has less than 500 e-commerce transactions every month and less than ten thousand daily page-views, Smart Lists will use data from similar businesses that are sharing data with Google Analytics in order to build the re-marketing list.
