By Ben Kingsley

The access of public records such as birth, death, marriage and crimes are important as they contain vital information that is required in dealings with the government or any other company. Criminal records are important as they contain information or background of the person including any arrests made. The records are available by request through the official website or by emailing the person or office where the records are made available. Texas criminal records, for example, are available under the Public Information Act. The requests should all be made in writing, as telephone requests are not honoured. Information requests are also available by submitting the same to the site's Public Information Request Page as well as sending email requests to the sites official email address at OGC.Webmaster@dps.texas.gov.

There are five types of crime records service available for the public in the Texas Department of Public Safety website. These services are (a) Texas Public Sex Offender Registry, (b) Criminal History Conviction Search, (c) Texas Recovery and Identification Program or T.R.I.P, (d) Help End Auto Theft or H.E.A.T and (e) Metals Registration Program.

The Sex Offender Registry of the State of Texas contains information on registered sex offenders. One can view the records as well as download the registry. The Criminal history conviction search contains information on criminal cases where the accused has already received conviction. Records available are limited to public information only and some cases, which contain juvenile, sealed, or expunged cases, are not available. The Recovery and Identification program is dedicated for farm owners who want to register their farm equipment with the government. This helps to track the stolen equipment easily. Last but not the least is the Anti-auto theft program or the HEAT that is dedicated to help people whose vehicles were stolen.

To do a Criminal History Name Search, the Texas state provides the Conviction Database, which are records obtained from the DPS Computerized Criminal History System or CCH. The records that are available for research are those records that have received conviction or deferred adjudication. Records that can be searched include arrests, prosecutions and case dispositions of those arrested due to Class B misdemeanour.

For those individuals who are looking to do criminal background checks or want to obtain a criminal record report, follow the guidelines implemented in the CR-63. The Office also offers a PDF form to help people requesting information get the procedure on how to review personal criminal history. As criminal records are included in the Public Information Act, requests not in accordance with the Act will not be entertained. Criminal records available from the Office are those records that have received convictions as well as been granted for adjudication. These records are also available in the internet. Information can also be requested by emailing the Office, faxing the request or sending it through mail. Each request is $10 and the office will only accept checks or money orders.
