Neon Signs And Their Uses Today

By Chris Hadley

Vibrant, eye-catching and striking, neon signs are a definitive part of the modern city landscape worldwide. It is difficult to imagine a town or city centre with no neon illumination to light up the evening buildings and skyline.

First demonstrated in 1910 at the Paris Motor Show, this gas filled tubing was initially developed as a form of lighting. Its popularity rose as an advertising and signage medium, becoming hugely popular in America during the twenties and thirties. It soon spread across the world and became a major presence, not just in advertising but also in illumination, art, and architecture.

As an advertising tool, neon signage is highly effective, drawing the eye with its vibrant colors and its ability to produce any slogan or form. In its development as a highly effective marketing tool, it has been used in the branding and advertising of many renowned products. Businesses use it widely for its signage and decorative benefits, in particular those restaurants, bars and clubs looking for a vibrant and exciting atmosphere.

Not just for use in marketing, it has become a common sight in the fine art arena. Recently, this versatile medium has gained in popularity the contemporary arts. Famous names such as Martin Creed and Bruce Nauman have been catalysts for its presence in many of the world's finest galleries.

As a fashionable addition to many home and office spaces, it offers stylish alternative lighting for a modern interior. Design companies create lighting specific to the desires of a customer and bespoke pieces to grace any given space. These illuminations can create a retro or modern feel and make an interesting centerpiece, for example in a games room or modern dining room.

As adverts, artistic statements or designer objects, neon signs hold their appeal for the modern home and marketplace. Even now the iconic images of many of our cities and famous brands are defined by the presence of this exciting and versatile medium. In whatever variety they might appear, our contemporary cultural and urban landscapes would be hard to recognize without their presence.
