To Find Topsoil Grand Blanc MI Is The Best Location To Check Out

By Carl Meyer

Soils are formed over a long period of time through various processes. One process involves the weathering of underlying rocks while another one involves the decomposition of plant matter. Alluvial soils are formed through the deposition of matter on rivers and seas. Loess soils are formed through the action of wind. The soil that is found on the topmost layer is called topsoil. When in need of Topsoil Grand Blanc MI should be visited.

Topsoil is composed of four different components regardless of how it was formed. Organic matter, air, mineral particles and water are the four components in this layer. Mineral particles occur as sand, clay, and silt. Air and water occupies about 50 percent of typical top soil. However, this varies depending on the amount of moisture in the layer.

Organic matter and mineral particles occupy the remaining 50 percent. About 2 to 6 percent of the total weight of typical mineral soils is made of organic matter. About 30 to 100 percent of weight of organic soils on the other hand is made of organic matter. An example of organic soils is peat. Different regions in a country can have different kinds of top soil. The quality and composition of the top soil also vary across different places.

What is even more exciting is that even a small piece of land can have different types of soils present. Various factors like the process that led to the formation of the soil makes this to be possible. This can also be influenced by farming practices performed on the land. The types of soils in a farm are mainly influenced by factors such as vegetation, nature of parent rock, climate, time, topography, and farm management practices.

The top soil does not extend too deep into the ground. In most cases, one will start accessing the subsoil after digging less than 30 centimeters into the ground. Subsoil is very different from top soil in many ways. In fact, soil can only be referred to as top soil if it meets certain classification criteria. Otherwise, it is classified as subsoil.

A darker color present in top soil differentiates it from subsoil. It is the presence of organic matter that comes from decaying plant and roots that brings about the darker color. Also, decaying animal tissue contribute to this darker color. Top soil is much more fertile due to the presence of organic matter as compared to subsoil.

Fertility is also contributed to by the fact that top soil usually has a lot of fertilizer, compost, manure, and other additives added into it. The presence of organic matter also makes top soil to be looser and less compacted. It has less bearing strength as a result. Plowing and other human activities also contribute to the soil become looser than subsoil.

Roots of most crops and plants are established in the top soil. This makes the layer to be highly dependent upon for production of food globally. As such, it is important to preserve this layer. Commercial top soil has been invented due to shortage of suitable top soil. One can purchase these commercial soils from garden stores for use in farming activities.
