How To Choose Memorial Stones For Your Loved Ones

By Scott Wagner

When a loved one passes away there are many decisions that need to be made about where they will rest. One decision that many people need to make is which of the many memorial stones they will choose to mark where their loved one will be buried or where their ashes will be placed. If you are not sure what to look for when you start your search, here are a few things you may want to consider.

A headstone or gravestone is a great way to pay tribute to someone significant in your life. They usually bear the name of the person, when they were born and when they passed away. There is often room for other names and dates which can be a great idea if you have more than one family member who will be interred together.

One of the first things to consider is your budget. Often, if your loved one has had a funeral plan put into place they may have budgeted for a stone as well as for the place where they will have their remains laid to rest. If not, the cost of the stone, the engraving and any special elements will need to be considered.

Finding companies that make these items is not difficult. There are many companies that make monuments both for use in cemeteries and in other locations as well. You may want to look at their inventory or style selection online as it may help you avoid some pressure when it comes time to actually purchase a stone for your loved one.

It is not uncommon for a loved one to be laid to rest without the stone being ready. Some designs can take a long time to complete especially if they are very complex. Also, if someone has passed on during the winter it may not be possible to set the stone at the grave or in the area where the person will be laid to rest.

Some individuals will choose to be buried in a traditional grave while others will want to be cremated and their remains placed in a niche wall or other similar structure. You need to consider this when choosing what size of stone you buy. A grave may have room for a larger unit while a niche wall will likely mean that you only have a plaque to work with. You also need to consider whether there will be more than one person interred in the same area as additional engraving will need to be added later.

Once you know the size of the stone you have to work with you may want to think about how decorative you want it to be. Some people want a plainer looking stone but others want one that has significant engravings that may relate to the life of the person who has passed on. If you have lost a child you may want to add images that are more childlike to capture the spirit of the deceased.

Of course, a headstone or plaque is not the only way to commemorate someone you have lost. Many people choose to sponsor plaques, benches or other items that are dedicated to the memory of people that they have lost. If you are thinking about doing this you may not be limited to the graveyard where the deceased is resting. Parks, marinas and other areas will often have benches or other items that can be named after someone special in your life.
