Guide To Public Arrest Records Search

By Claire Dowell

The public arrest records Illinois generates are documents that are issued to individuals who have violated certain laws of the state or the nation. The residents of the state can readily access this file. This is in line with the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act. This way access to the state's criminal records is convenient for most of the residents of the state.

Illinois arrest records are used by the residents when they look into the criminal background of an individual. Residents of the state would refer to this record when they wish to know more about the people around them. Parents are one of the people who regularly request for this file. They use it to check on the identity of the people that their children are seeing. Owners of businesses would now require job applicants to go through a series of background check. This is one way for them to know about the applicant as well as a way for them to filter their applicants. Even investigators and local authorities of the state would use this document during their investigation proceedings and in some cases it can help find the resolution to the case.

As the name suggest, the document would show information about where and when the individual was arrested. It would not be a useful document without the crimes that the individual has been reported for. Other information such as the details about the witnesses to the crime scene and the officer in charge of the case are not fully indicated on the public file. This is a way to protect the people involved.

In order to get a copy of an arrest record, one has to be the person on the record, if not; a court order has to be secured to proceed with the request. An application form has to be filled out in order to proceed with the request. One should know the details about the arrest since it will be used to conduct the search. The personal details of the one who filed the request are also necessary because it is used to verify one's identity and relationship to the person on the file.

One has to go to the office of the Police Department in Illinois under the Bureau of Identification. The said office is the one that manages and keeps the arrest files of the state. The office allows a fingerprint scan for the cost of $20 per request. This is only allowed for people who have the authority; otherwise a name-based search has to be done. A $16 processing fee is required to conduct the search using the name of the person in question.

Online retrieval of the public arrest reports has helped speed up the process. It has simplified the search and made it convenient and easy for most of the residents of Illinois. The need to go to any office is no longer necessary since it can be done at home and in just a few clicks, the results are then displayed on the computer screen.
