Issues With Buying Ground Routes For Sale

By Christopher Bennett

When desiring to expedite the delivery of a package, FedEx often comes to mind. For, the express delivery service has been in business for years. While this is the case, there are now drivers and owners which have Ground routes for sale.

One new route owner purchased a route without any assistance from a broker. While the former owner provided all the necessary documentation to prove income, operating expenses and ownership, the buyer, a local finance manager was still scammed. For, the route had been sold a number of times prior to the finance manager taking ownership.

When considering the purchase an owner absent route, it is important to remember that just because this is the case does not mean the business is successful. As such, if individuals are involved in the buying and selling of ground routes, it should be noted that the path can often be extremely treacherous. For, even with a background in finance, buyers are still being scammed.

While sounding like an exciting and easy way to make a living, individuals need to understand that there is no clear way to know how much money an individual will make in this type of business. Whereas, by having no idea of what is a normal amount of income, most anyone can convince another with enough force and charisma to back up any amount of potential income.

Buyers are often misled with regards to absent owner status as well. For, while individuals can run a business from a distance, owners often need put in two to three hours a week overseeing the business, customer satisfaction, payroll and workers. As such, just because a business is labeled as absent owner, this does not imply the owner can just sit back and relax without putting any time into the business.

When it comes to an absentee owned FedEx route business, it should be noted that any business can be ran in this manner. For example, an individual could purchase an existing business, including management and staff, then sit at home and contemplate life. After which, the individual sells the business to someone for a slight profit, then that person does the same thing. After a few rounds, the business goes bankrupt, most likely at the hands a new owner.

With that being said, there are good people selling profitable routes. Buyers just need to vet all aspects of ownership before buying or contracting a route from another individual. Otherwise, it can often be a disappointing and costly experience. As such, when asking for owner name, license number, operating expenses, employee names, payroll information, tax documents and other materials, be sure and also ask for sales history report.

The bottom line, sellers will do almost anything to convince buyers a business is a legitimate owner absent opportunity. If this is the case, sellers will not have a problem providing any information requested by buyers, including current operating expenses, outstanding loans, payroll, employee names and references. If an individual denies to provide such information, it is most likely a good time to walk away.
