Why Growing Cycads Saves Them From Extinction

By Nancy Phillips

Gardens provide a sanctuary for people to relax and spend quality time. However, it is not easy to have a good garden unless one puts in a lot of effort, and that is why many would not bother to have one. Studies have shown that there are some plants that can be planted in the garden that require low maintenance, and Growing Cycads would be the way to go.

Apart from creating appeal both in and outside the house, they are relatively cheap to maintain. In order to plant them till they reach a mature age, one needs to make sure that the soil they are planted in has good drainage. This is important because if the soil holds a lot of water, the roots of the plant may start rotting and would soon die.

They usually have delicate roots that may get destroyed very easily, meaning that one should prepare the land for planting early in advance so that once they get placed in the soil they are not disturbed. They do not need much water to maintain them hence watering should be done few times a week in the hot seasons and at least once a week in the colder seasons.

An important factor to keep in mind when growing the cycads is that there are several species of them, and each of them require different conditions in order to grow efficiently. People who have dealt with them before have understood the different species and how they behave to different conditions, and it is important to have this information so that plants are grown and cared for in the appropriate ways.

There are some species that can be consumed once they become mature enough. However, before preparing them for eating, there are some processes that should be followed in order to remove the bad toxins. They are a good source of food for chicken so farmers are encouraged to grow them to supplement the other chicken feeds.

Another use of these plants is that they can be used for medical reasons. The bark and some of the leaves may be taken through special processes to make medicine. The oils that are extracted from the seeds make oils that help in addressing skin problems. Sometimes, their large leaves can be harvested and dried also under special steps to make decorative pieces that have been known to fetch a handsome price in some areas where they are in high demand.

Sometimes, there are fibers on the leaves of some species which can be harvested and used to make pillow stuffing, make mattresses and in some instances clothes. The leaves themselves can be weaved to form hats and baskets that also fetch a reasonable price when sold, as well as being tough and durable.

This species of plants has also been known to have nitrogen-fixing properties in the soil that makes the soil more fertile and suitable for growing other plants. When matured, the big species can be cut down and their stems can be used as a building material. They are almost extinct so to save them from completely running put, more people should consider having them.
