All You Need To Know About Ductless Systems

By Jason Bailey

Over the years, HVAC systems have remained relatively the same. What may have changed is the way they are controlled. Newer materials are also used nowadays, and this has improved their efficiency and cost. The thermostats used today are programmable, which means modern systems can be switched on and off automatically based on user preferences. Ductless systems have become increasingly popular over the years for a number of reasons.

A cooling or heating system that does not have air ducts is obviously cheaper to procure and install. After all, there are no ducts to procure or install. The heating or cooling system is installed in each room and comes in direct contact with air in the enclosed space. This eliminates the need to use air ducts.

A duct free air conditioning system can also be referred to as the split air conditioning system. It has two main components, the condenser unit and air handler. The air handling unit is responsible for cooling the air, so it is located inside the house, while the condenser unit cools and compresses the refrigerant, so its usually mounted outdoors. The two components are connected by electrical wires and refrigerant tubing.

Refrigeration and air conditioning systems have the same principle of operation. That is; an expanding gas absorbs heat energy from the surroundings. In that regard, the compressed refrigerant in the compressor absorbs heat when it expands inside the evaporator, thereby cooling the surroundings.

There are basically two types of duct-free heating. The first is the electric space heater. This device is usually plugged into an electric outlet and powered on. The heating element produces heat which is blown by a fan into the surroundings. The other type of heating system is the hydronic heating system.

A hydronic system can be used for both heating and cooling, and it's also duct free. During the hot summer months, chilled water is run through the system, thereby cooling the rooms. In the winter, however, steam or hot water from the boiler is run through the system. Radiators, or heat exchangers, and baseboards extract the heat and radiate it to the surrounding air. The system is controlled by a thermostat and solenoid valves that work together to ensure that heating and cooling is stopped whenever the desired temperature is reached. For instance, when temperatures rise beyond the desired level, the thermostat sends a signal to shut off the valves, thereby preventing cold water from running through the radiator and cooling the room.

Window mounted air conditioners are also duct free because they do not have any type of ductwork. They are usually mounted on the window frame. The condenser unit is exposed to the outside while the air handler has contact with indoor air.

Whichever type of HVAC system you choose, be sure to hire a licensed contractor to design and install the system. Do not forget to have it serviced on a regular basis. As your system ages, be sure to start budgeting for a replacement. This is because heaters and air conditioners become inefficient, perform poorly, start breaking down more often and consume too much fuel or electrical energy as they get older and older.
