How To Deal With Vocal Fatigue Without Medication

By Dennis Gray

Voice production is controlled by throat muscles that experience fatigue like any other in the body. Some of the causes of vocal fatigue include extensive use and misuse. Experts in voice health and experienced users agree that a longer voice use career and quality production can be achieved without the need for medication. They have shared their experiences and findings to benefit other users in maintaining high quality voices.

Regular movement is one of the tactics that have been used to enhance the quality of voice produced. Some of the activities that result in movement include swimming, walking briskly and working out. These activities enable you to exercise all muscles evenly and thus keep you generally fit for any performance.

Silence allows the muscles responsible for producing voice to relax. In between singing sessions, you should keep mum and only talk when it is necessary. This also includes limiting telephone conversations. Like any other muscle, your throat experiences wear and tear and requires a recovery period to avoid extensive damage. Adequate time to heal will ensure that you sing for a longer period.

Voice quality is directly affected by diet. Every voice user should take a minimum of three meals in a day. The diet should be balanced and free of sugars and lactose. A higher portion of vegetables, fresh fruits and proteins will enhance healthy vocal cords and body in general. A good diet is essential in maintaining constant blood sugar and minimizing the chances of acid influx. You should take your meals long before you go to bed.

The use of steam inhalators is an excellent way to safeguard the quality of your voice. The effectiveness of inhalators is boosted by the addition of sea salt or bicarbonate soda to the inhalator. It produces vapor that has both healing and relieving powers. The vapor works on the upper respiratory track by dislodging the impurities that may be found there including mucus. This has a significant effect on voice quality.

Adequate sleep will beat any other artificial method used to improve voice production. A good singer should enjoy up to eight uninterrupted hours of sleep. This will help restore your voice to normal after a prolonged and intensive day of performance. For persons who experience acid reflux, tilt your head up to ensure that acid does not creep up the throat.

Stress has a direct effect on the quality of voice produced at any time. The effect is instantaneous and comes with far reaching damages. For the voice user, it is advisable to avoid arguments of any nature. The tension that results from arguments, noise and inconveniences cause the throat to crack leading to vocal damage. The fatigue also affects your ears meaning that you should avoid high decibel sounds.

Humidity is important in keeping your throat in good shape. This is achieved by taking enough water as well as singing in a place with sufficient air humidity. The humidity comfort levels vary from one person to the other. Ensure that your humidifier is tuned to keep your environment healthy for your throat. Your vocal production quality will also be improved through reduction in air pollution. You may also consider massaging the throat on regular basis to relax the surrounding muscles.
