Dealing With Sea Cargo Procedures

By Belinda Norbert

Sea freight is considered the conventional method of transporting consignment through ocean-going vessels. In general, it is reliable and cost-effective. Rates are usually determined based on cubic meters and up to the port of destination. There may be surcharges depending on your arrangements with the transport company. Clients also pay customs fees. However, the total cost is more reasonable compared to air freight.

Sea freight rates are determined by cubic meters with the standard of one cubic meter for every booking. Terminal fees must be settled after your commodities reach the destination port.

Be sure to indicate your complete name, business or home address, and telephone numbers. These details must be printed legibly on your booking form. Do not forget to submit the list of goods plus duplicates of your passport for proper identification. You can make arrangements for pick-up of your belongings from the house or place of business. These are delivered to the shipping firm's stockroom for weighing and processing. It is necessary for the shipper to give you an invoice for this particular consignment.

Submit all your documents two days before the schedule. Booking arrangements are completed usually in eight hours. Pickups are made only from Mondays to Fridays. Likewise, expect a call from the driver assigned to get your cargo. Your service provider will send details of arrangements and billing. Settle all fees before the ship's departure by paying bank to bank or credit card.

All the merchandise must be packed properly to avoid damages and losses. You can choose a moving firm that also takes care of packing and storage. Do it yourself packing is also possible if your budget is limited. Simply make sure that you purchase high-quality packing tape and durable boxes. Indicate the exact contents of your consignment. Again, customs bureaus are very stern about the declaration of goods.

You can take care of packing your cargo properly to stay away from unwarranted damages. Close the boxes properly and go through all requirements prescribed by authorities. Remember that there are extra charges that you may incur such as use of pallets. There is no automatic insurance for consignments while maximum liability goes to the shipping company. Confirm conditions for liability coverage as well as separate insurance policies for transport. The invoice for each consignment is sent to the consignee. Likewise, dispatch, storage and shipping procedures are not the same for all countries.
