Learning About Polyethylene Terephthalate

By Lenna Stockwell

It may be something new to most people to hear about "polyethylene terephthalate" but when you learn about the products made out of this thermoplastic polymer you'll discover it is common. If you want to know some basic information about such a commonly used plastic, read on.

As a kind of polyester, PET is actually the most common polymer in the polyester family. It is the kind of thermoplastic that is a polymer which when exposed to heat at a particular temperature becomes "moldable." It is rather easy to find thermoplastic that may be in different types and the most commons ones are used for custom thermoplastic packaging which includes retail product packaging, food packaging that is custom-made and several other custom product packaging for the medical industry as well as the agricultural industry.

Polyethylene, which also is known as PET or PETE, is used primarily to make containers for food, beverages and other liquids. Most water bottles and soda bottles are produced using PET. Companies use this plastic because it water-resistant, which means it can hold liquid. It also is quite lightweight, which makes transportation of products easier and cheaper.

Other products created by using PET include the sails for sailboats, although in this case the product is usually called by the brand name Dacron. Dacron also is used to make all sorts of polyester clothing. While both a water bottle and a piece of clothing can be made from polyethylene terephthalate, although the polymers are processed differently depending on what products will be made.

Yes, thermoplastics are most often recyclable and the most commonly accepted of them are PET bottles. The resin code 1 or 01 is what identifies them. It's also true that the majority of the recycling centers around the United States accept bottles and containers with this particular resin code and some offer to refund a deposit if you recycle your bottles.

PET bottles are chopped up into flakes the moment they enter the recycling process and then later reduced into becoming really small pellets. What is produced can then be used to make polyester threads for the manufacture of fabric and carpeting. Recycled PET is also used in order to create strapping, new bottles as well as other plastic products.
