The Steps To StArt a Farmer's Stand

By George Dodson

Whenever you travel by car, you probably often see a stand across the road. Someone was selling something such as tomatoes, cantaloupe, or some other form of vegetable and fruit.

These farmer stands help greatly in small communities. Fruits and vegetables are being sold in their freshest condition. You then must sell it or give it away because it doesn't last much longer after that. It is for this sole reason that farmers make an effort to build a farmer stand to get rid of their fresh produce while earning income. Since the produce are fresh, goods sold on farmer stands taste much better then from those sold at supermarkets. Most of the time, they are fresh and are free of pesticides and other contaminants.

How can you set up your very own farmer stand if you are growing your own crops?

Among those that you want to consider first is the location. Do you want to have your stand set up beside other competition? If you choose to establish your stand at the local market you will need to pay a small fee for the location. Furthermore, if you choose to sell at the local market you'll be working with a lot of competition. You might consider placing it at the end of the driveway. People driving by can see your stand or the sign pointing to it. In a parking space, travelers will be able to inspect your goods.

What do you want to sell? What are the produce commonly bought by travelers? Among those that travelers love to purchase from farmer stands are fruits such as apples and oranges and vegetables such as tomatoes, corn and cantaloupe. There is a great probability that these choices will be given the most attention from buyers.

What would be the best time to put up your farm stand? What is the best time of the week and of the day? Should you set it up in the evening? You'll probably want to do some testing here. You can simply ask competitions for tips or advise. If not, you can simply browse the net about this topic. Surely there are other farmers who have run farm stands who had that information.

How much would you charge for your goods or merchandise? It is always important to keep your produce goods at an affordable price. For example you can sell a fruit for $0.5 or a "buy one take one" for $1. You can also sell by the box or carton depending on the produce your advertising.

It would also be best if you start off with a small quantity of fruits and vegetables and check from there the results. You will then be able to come up with a suitable list of fruits and vegetables that people would love to buy. With this, you won't have to spend much and you'll be sure to provide for your clients.
