By Karen Patterson

There are areas of operations in driving that are referred to as safety sensitive. These are situations in the transport industry that have a crucial impact on the safety of the vehicle operator and the people around them. The department of transport requires that one acquires a DOT health card to prove that they are fit to operate in such conditions. When acquiring it, there is a process that involves a lot of physical checks on your body.

The first thing that is checked is the vision. Driving rules stipulate that a driver should have acuity of twenty over forty and a seventy inch peripheral for horizontal meridian. During the test, it is checked whether the driver has achieved this. In case of a deviation in these requirements, appropriate medication is given to correct it before certifying them.

The test will also check into the hearing capacity of a driver. They need to achieve a forced whisper about five ft away regardless of whether they have a hearing aid or without. The importance of this test is because of communication and safety between the driver and the public in sensitive conditions.

Blood pressure or pulse rate. A test is carried out to give indications of the presence of an irregular heartbeat, and high blood pressure. If this crucial test is ignored, a condition like a heart attack can happen to the driver endangering their life and that of all the people around them. This card will give the green light on if the blood pressure of this expert is fit to operate in such situations.

Undertaking a urinalysis test is made possible. During the process, a test of urinalysis is undertaken to look for indications of some minor medical conditions such as diabetes. There are frequent tendencies by most drivers to assume such conditions. This test ensures that such conditions are noted, and medication or regular checkup prescribed. This is done to prevent an occurrence of an attack which can endanger their lives and that of the public when operating a vehicle.

Breathing conditions and the lungs will also be looked into. The purpose of this is to ensure that vital conditions such as asthma and tuberculosis are noted if they exist. A case scenario is where the professional will have such a condition and go to operate in an environment that will have triggers to these illnesses. This test will help to show the prescience and level of such conditions. The card will only be issued if the driver has either a controlled condition or whether it has no such condition.

The health condition of the spine is also checked to ascertain if the spine of a driver is fit for operations in sensitive environments. This is mostly for long distance drivers especially trucks who require sitting for long hours. The test is normally carried out to indicate whether they have a limitation of motion, previous surgery on the spine and its tenderness.

Finally, a test to ascertain the condition of the abdomen and viscera is taken. The purpose of this very important test is to check for enlarged liver and muscle weakness. The card will be issued once it is clarified that the abdomen is in good condition and no illness can adversely affect the working of this professional.
