Locating And Purchasing Replacement Turntable Needles

By Jason Martin

A lot of music fans will own a collection of vinyl discs and will need a record deck in order to listen to them. Modern music that is released is now sold in digital format for download or on CD and styluses for a record player are often difficult to come by. When you are trying to find and buy replacement turntable needles, you will have to find a suitable supplier that can sell you the correct type.

The stylus is a major part of a turntable as it is the physical connection between the vinyl and the audio equipment. When a stylus is worn out or damaged it will have to be replaced to produce good quality audio and to protect your records. There are many different needles available and it is very important that you buy the correct one.

The ideal place to find and purchase a replacement stylus is a reputable audio store in your local area. Many stores are available with very experienced staff that will help and advise you and they will stock needles to fit many types of record player. If they do not have a needle or cartridge that is a match they can usually order one from a supplier in most cases.

The web is also a very useful place to purchase needles and there are a large number of online suppliers to choose from. You will need to have a look at their pages of stock and it is a good idea to have the serial number and manufacturer of your stylus. You will often pay less when buying products online as the web based retailers will have much lower overheads than the high street retailers.

If a web retailer or audio dealer in your neighborhood is unable to help it is useful to look at an internet auction site. Most of these sites will have a list of needles with good descriptions and color photos and the lots are open to bids or the best offer. If you have any concerns about a particular listed item, you should contact the seller and ask for more details prior to bidding.

If your record player is an old model, you may have difficulty in finding a needle and there are a few options. You can visit a nearly new store or junk shop to see if they have any old turntables which you can strip for spare parts. It is also worth speaking to an electrical engineer to see if they can adapt your deck or fit a new arm which will accept a modern cartridge.

You can also try getting in touch with needle manufacturers to see if they sell directly to the public. If your turntable is no longer in production, they may have some old stock that will be suitable. If they cannot supply a stylus, they may recommend one of their approved retailers, or advise you where to continue looking.

A record player needle is a delicate item and is needs to be protected to keep it in good condition. If you do not fit a needle when you buy one, keep it boxed until you intend to fit it to your deck. When you buy a replacement, it is advisable to keep the receipt in case you need to return or exchange the item.
