Knowing How To Get Into Ivy League Colleges

By Olivia Cross

Getting into a prestigious college or university is not easy. Every year, these schools have thousands and thousands of students applying for a limited number of places. Learning how to get into ivy league colleges is about being organized and knowing what steps to take along the way.

Firstly, from elementary school, you should encourage your son or daughter to read and develop a broad range of interests. If they have a special talent, such as in music or sports, you should work with them to develop it. In middle-school, they should continue reading and develop their writing and communication skills. It is also a good time for them to develop leadership traits.

You should also take the SAT II subject exams. Try to schedule these for the end of the school year so that the subject will be fresh in your head. Many students sit five or six of the SAT II subject exams. The amount you take depends on you and which subjects you are strongest in.

Volunteering and doing community service is also important. So is doing well in the SAT exam. It is a good idea for students to take the SAT in the spring of their sophomore year. They should also work on sharpening their writing and vocabulary skills. Some students find it helpful to read books from various college reading lists.

Some parents hire private college counselors who charge a fee to coach and tutor a student through the admissions process. They offer advice and guidance as to what to do and what to expect. Many of these private counselors are former admissions officers from the Ivy League. However, they often charge thousands of dollars for their services.

To get accepted into one of these schools, the main thing is to be an excellent student. These schools typically look for students who have done well all throughout high school, not just the final two years. So your grades need to be as high as possible. Many parents hire tutors to help their child if they see the child is struggling in a subject area. However, grades are not the only thing the schools look for. In many cases, they also recruit students who are talented athletes in a certain sport, such as football or track and field.

If you are a parent that believes that a private counselor is a good idea, make sure that whomever you choose is a member of a valid counseling association, such as the Independent Educational Consultants Association or the National Association for College Admissions Counseling. Also, make sure that you choose someone who will work to find the best fit for your son or daughter, and not simply push a particular school for its reputation.

The senior year is the most important year. In addition to taking more AP courses, it is time to send in college applications. Ask teachers to write recommendations for you. Take the October SAT if you need to and make sure you get lots of advice from your counselor during this process. You also need to stay organized and mark important deadlines on your calendar. College acceptance letters normally start arriving between December and April. Consider working in the summer if you need to raise money for college.
