It requires focused training and apprenticeship in order to pass the certifications. Courses include lock picking, rekeying, changing the combinations, code cutting, and also business organization. Also, it depends on the location in terms of how long the apprenticeship may take place. Some have it for four years, but are paid for it.

Certification may not be a full requirement but it would eventually give more opportunities and gives you the right knowledge and have higher rates as well. It gives you credibility, professionalism, and profit. The Associated Locksmiths of America or ALOA is the one administering these exams and they also grant a number of designations. Here are the states that would require a certification for being a locksmith. These are Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, and Texas. Additionally, there are cities or districts that would also require this and also some extra documentations. There are places in getting this training. Checking the phonebook would be a start if there are any training facilities. Basically all large cities have these trainings offered. In case there is no facility that is nearby, you have an option to have the courses taken online. These programs are readily available and can be done at the comfort of your home and with a flexible time schedule as well.

There are personalities and traits that should be within a locksmith in order for them to be successful in this field.
