The Importance Of Honey Bee Keeping HI

By Deborah Stewart

Ever since early humans figured out that there was a delicious treat inside the treacherous beehives, people have been eager to get their hands on it. While in the early days, this involved a painful and dangerous raid on the hive, things have gotten much more sophisticated in recent years. Now, scientific information on how bees behave and communicate has led to better honey bee keeping HI.

Among the most iconic elements of the Hawaiian Islands are the beautiful plants that are grown and harvested there. Some of these plants are flowers and are used for decorative purposes, while others are food items. Naturally, these islands rely on many of these plants. Local beekeepers help during the pollination seasons by artificially increasing the population of bees to help pollinate and keep everything growing.

Although there are many different products that people collect or extract from bees and their hives, honey is the number one product that comes to most people's minds. That is because many find it delicious in many different foods. While this product is commonly found extracted, meaning it is removed from the comb and strained, it can also be bought still on the comb.

Pollen is a highly useful product that is used in a number of different ways. The consumption of pollen has known health benefits, and is also used in a number of shower products like shampoo, moisturizer, and conditioner. While pollen is what bees feed to their young, most hives have excess pollen that is collected, and this is what beekeepers harvest in their pollen traps.

Royal jelly by far rates among the most expensive products that comes from bees. This is a substance that is secreted from worker bees and is used to feed their young when they are in the early developmental stages. Royal jelly is also fed to the queen larvae for their entire larval period. The process of extracting this jelly takes a long time and is very difficult, and so many beekeepers choose not to do this.

Many people have heard the phrase, "None of your beeswax, " at least once in their life, but much fewer people actually know about the various uses of this substance. Besides just candles, this is also used in an art form known as batik, which uses wax to dye designs onto fabrics. Beeswax is also an essential part of building certain instruments such as the accordion.

Although a lot of people might not know what propolis is or even know that it comes from bees, a lot of people use it every day. It is an essential ingredient in things like toothpaste, chewing gum, and tinctures, and comes from a collection of plant gums and resins that the worker bees use to repair their hive. This can either be collected with special tools or by scraping it off of the hive itself.

Although the industry of beekeeping in Hawaii has changed a lot, the Native Hawaiians have their own history of harvesting these products. As far back as 1794, there is evidence that the Hawaiians were harvesting beeswax. When Captain John Kenrick visited in that year, he saw 80 pounds of the substance that washed ashore.
