Learn More About Mysticism And Christianity

By Jerry Foster

Generally, the experience of Christianity often goes beyond religion and is founded on patriarchal morality and obedience. Nevertheless, mysticism, on the other hand, can be used to imply a non-legalistic religion but with some life of spirituality. It is some heartfelt intimacy to God normally based some joyful or miraculous appreciation of the ability of the Spirit to transform lives. In consequence, it is very crucial to understand mysticism and Christianity in a bid to see the possibility of coexistences of the two.

Basically, Christian religion may be a kind of mystical faith and this kind of Christianity is believed to have been there since the time of Jesus. However, the different political, social, and historical reasons have made this mystic view of Christianity as marginal within the church. Basically, the Christian region took its dominant position in the Roman Empire around in the fifth century as mystics sought profound intimacy with God through retreating in the wilderness and deserts away from cities.

The foundation of mysticism in deserted places resulted in the initial monasteries. Basically, these were people who lived together in perpetual prayer and meditation drawn from different areas across the world. These Christian mystics were predominantly found in monasteries and convents.

On the other hand, mystics have existed in every era and century of Christianity. Nevertheless, the political attributes of institutional churches led to the persecution of a number of them. Others also did learn to disguise their wise teachings through keenly worded poems and books that were perceived as non-threatening or against the religious authorities. In consequence, mystics together with their teachings remain to be real and are considered as the best-kept secrets of Christians.

However, some Christians today are still suspicious concerning mysticism. Nevertheless, majority of Christians are slowly accepting the transformative beauty that comes with these spiritual practice such as the sacred reading, contemplative prayer and meditation.

On the contrary, rediscoveries have been made concerning the ordinary Christian acts such as the use of the Rosary by the Catholics, which is seen as an instruments or way of getting involved in contemplative silence. Such rediscoveries as well reveal the less dominant practices used in deep meditations and intrinsic prayers usually performed by most Eastern Orthodox Christianity as a way of coping with non-dual consciousness of Christians.

The origin of the wisdom in Christian mystics is the Bible itself. However, the eras of reading as well as interpretation of the Bible in accordance to the views of anti-mysticism has created some visionary elements of New Testament wisdom teachings very easy to misunderstand. For instance, various bluntly contemplative statements in the bible as they were in the initial Hebrew language have been mistranslated in the process of rendering into other languages.

Nevertheless, those who are wise and keen can, however, identify the different mystical messages in various biblical scriptures. Basically, the mystical biblical approach is to treat the bible as a document that has been encrypted with details of ancient Greeks who participated in some activities of divine nature. At the same time, Christian religion has been based on two teachings that are controversial but also seen as mystical. The first teaching is that Christ is fully divine and secondly, he is fully human.
