What A Golf Course Builder Does

By Larry Murray

One needs a lot of experience as well as formal education to do a great work in building a golf course. Designing of courses is one of the areas classified under landscape architecture. In this field, professionals design new courses and renovate existing ones. The creation of the course is planned and designed in advance by the designer. Builders then implement the field according to the work of the designer. A golf course builder can also be the designer.

Today, computers have made the job much easier as builders now use computer software to plan and design the layout of a site forehand. The designs are created on a computer to include walkways, course obstacles, thoroughfares, and greens among other components. The work is done in consultation with the owners of the courses and the staff so as to develop desired features.

The designing of courses draws from several different disciplines, including engineering, agrostology, landscape architecture, and agronomy to produce uniqueness in the courses. The golfers should find the landscape challenging while visually appealing at the same time. Related buildings near or on the course may also be designed by these professionals.

One should be able to make projects economically feasible by having some knowledge of budgeting. The designer needs to make sure that the site is environmentally feasible and economically viable. The construction process happens in phases. Coordinating the work done by other professionals in the various phases is also the duty of the designer.

The potential of the site must be evaluated by the architect. For existing courses, they need to evaluate limitations before they start remodeling. The topography must be surveyed and the soil analyzed too. The designers work with scientists to study possible environmental impact that the facility will have on wildlife as well as vegetation. After coming up with the master plan, it must be submitted to the local authorities before progressing from that point.

The reason for submitting the master plan to the local municipality is to obtain necessary regulatory approvals and building permits. After the approvals are obtained, the designer must choose the kind of irrigation systems that will be installed and how they will be installed. They also choose the kind of turf to plant on the landscape. The choices named above are done taking into account maintenance and sustainability concerns as well as playability.

Becoming a golf course designer requires one to have a degree in landscape architecture. Applicants into learning institutions are usually required to submit their portfolios as part of the process of admission. The portfolios are needed so that the institution can gauge the level of creativity of the applicant as well as their visual communication instincts. Portfolios may be comprised of freehand sketches, CAD designs, paintings, and photographs.

If one has a degree in engineering, they can qualify to work as designers for courses. Engineering course offer educational background needed to design landscape. Landscape architecture degree covers courses like drafting, environmental science, and chemistry. One can better their chances at getting a job by completing internship.
