Becoming An Effective Respiratory Therapist

By Franklin Skribbit

When you know that you are interested in a career in respiratory therapy, you will be working very closely with your patients. When you study respiratory therapy, you will want to be well aware of how you are going to develop relationships with each of your patients.

As you are working on becoming a better manager, you should understand the principles that are universally good for managers to develop. While you are working on developing these skills, you may start to notice a difference in the way you interact with your team.

One of the most important things to know as a business person is that you need to show up for work every single day, on time. No matter what you may have going on in your personal life, make sure that you are at work every day.

If you are working with a child you will need to make sure that you talk to the child in a manner that the child understands. Take the time that you can to develop a relationship with the child and ensure that the child is going to trust you throughout the treatment.

There will, obviously, be times that you will be required to correct your team but you should not dwell on these times. Correct behavior that needs to be corrected and then do all that you can to emphasize the good that your team is doing and the progress that they are making.

However, going into work every day shows that you are dedicated and committed to your job. More importantly, it shows that you don't just view it as a job; you view it as a career and a lifestyle.

Second, you should make sure that your patients are as educated as possible. Often times, people struggle feeling comfortable with their respiratory therapy simply because they do not realize or understand what is going on with their therapy.

When you are setting expectations for your team, you may have some people that are not happy with what you are requiring. Although some people may not be happy, it is important that you take the feedback from the entire group to be more important than just one person.

Bill Swanson, CEO of Raytheon, once said "A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, or others, is not a nice person." Your character is mostly defined by how you treat people who are below you in the ranks of your business.

As a respiratory therapist, your relationship with your patients is integral. Not only are they required for you to continue to have a job, but the relationship will also help you treat every case in a respectful and effective manner.

As a nursing administrator it is important that you know how you are going to be an effective leader. Develop your leadership skills an continue to develop your leadership skills so you can be sure that you are going to lead your team as well as possible. Getting feedback from your boss and your team can also be a great way to improve your leadership skills. Being a good leader and developing these skills will be well worth your time.
