Using Sheet Laminators To Protect Documents

By Lila Barry

Items that are subject to being soiled, or that are important to preserve, are often laminated to protect them. There are large machines that will do this, and even smaller desktop versions. These are heat powered, however, and can sometimes damage the very items they are supposed to be protecting. Sheet laminators do the same thing, but without the potentially damaging heat.

These sheets vary in size, though none are suitable for very large items. Popular sizes fit letters size documents and business card sizes. The larger sizes can be used for multiple documents and then cut to size. For example, for covering business cards, several could be covered with the same sheet and then cut to the proper size, leaving a slight edge so they don't peel.

Photos can also be protected in this way. This is perfect for those carried around in your wallet. The plastic is crystal clear and non-distorting. Parents have sometimes covered a set of photos, putting them on a ring, and giving to their child or toddler as a personal album. This is especially helpful if the parent need to be absent for a time, such as for surgery or the birth of a new baby. This helps reassure the child that the parent is coming back.

There are many craft projects that can be designed using different sizes or cutting to size for the best fit. Some of these include bookmarks, placements, nametags, and garden tags. These are all made by a similar method. A decorative item is selected, then sandwiched between the two pieces of self-sealing plastic.

Making nametags individualized is easy. Just use a drawing or stickers or something that depicts a person's special interest. Use card stock or poster board to support the chosen items. Be sure to write the name first in large letters so it can be read from a distance, adding decorations around it. This makes a very personal nametag. After sealing between the self-sealing plastic, it becomes very sturdy.

Use a similar method for making bookmarks. You can use anything that will fit between the two sheets of plastic. School teachers often print lists of reading strategies, or ideas for reading questions. Covering them with plastic makes them sturdy and well protected from soiling from snacks that many students like to have while reading. You can use pieces of lace or a piece of artwork to make it personal.

Placemats are fun to make for different holidays. If there are children in the family, their holiday art, either made especially for the purpose, or done in school and brought home, make excellent items to make the placemat. How much better to use their artwork at the holiday table than to just have it hanging on the refrigerator. Each child in the family can do their own design, making a very individualized project.

Self-sealing sheet laminators make protecting valuable documents easy. They also make excellent craft projects. They are easy to use, with no additional adhesive needed. They are easily cut to size for odd sized projects, using just a pair of craft scissors. Add in the fact that they are inexpensive, and you have an excellent product.
